Selective Mutism & Play Therapy
Jared Andes, LCSW
April 23, 2021
9:00AM to 12:30 PM MST
Registration Fee: $75.00
Description: Selective Mutism effects 1 in 1000 children, with more recent studies suggesting the number is somewhat higher than that. It is a disorder marked by significant anxiety. Play therapy addresses Selective Mutism uniquely by focusing on building the relationship, creating an environment free from judgement, and facilitating the development of coping skills and social skills. Play Therapy can be utilized to decrease barriers to treatment. In this presentation, participants will learn to conceptualize Selective Mutism and will learn how Play Therapy skills and interventions can be used to treat anxious symptoms.
Learning Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to accurately identify and diagnose Selective Mutism using Play Therapy skills.
2) Participants will be able to explain the four stages in the Anxiety Cycle and its impact on Play Therapy.
3) Participants will be able to implement three Play Therapy approaches to foster relationship and growth within the therapeutic alliance.
4) Participants will be able to identify two Play Therapy based therapeutic exposures to decrease Selective Mutism symptoms.
