FOUNDATIONS OF PLAY THERAPY: A HISTORICAL AND PRACTICAL OVERVIEW

Objectives:
This workshop is a foundational beginning for those new to play therapy or beginning to explore the application of play therapy. It’s a also a great refresher for those who are more seasoned in the field or are looking to expand their theoretical knowledge. This course will go towards the history and theory requirements of the new RPT credential. We will begin by exploring the history and development of play therapy. Then, we will dive into seminal and historical theories such as child-centered play therapy, filial therapy, Jungian, Gestalt, and more. With each theory, we will identify the basic tenets, how it applies to the therapeutic powers of play, the basic application of the theory, and example interventions. We will also explore how they conceptualize psychopathology, therapy goals, and progress.
Objectives:
After the workshop, participants will be able to:
-Rehearse the history and development of play therapy
-Identify the 4 therapeutic powers of play and how each theory covered conceptualizes them
-Identify the basic tenets of the seminal theories of play (Adlerian, child-centered, cognitive-behavioral,developmental, ecosystemic, filial, gestalt, Jungian, object- relations, and
Theraplay)
-Identify how each seminal theory conceptualizes psychopathology/client dysfunction
-Identify how each seminal theory conceptualizes treatment goals and progress -Verbalize how to apply each seminal theory and identify 1-3 interventions for each theory
-Know where to get additional information and/or training on each theory -Demonstrate basic intervention use for each seminal theory

This training is meant to be an overview on play therapy theory and the history/development of play therapy. Attendees may need further training, information, or certification to competently apply these theories. Play therapy credit may not be awarded to non-mental health professionals.

Sarah Stroup, MA, LMFT, RPT-S and Maggi Leavitt, MA, LMFT, RPT-S from the Monarch Training Center
Sarah Stroup, LMFT, RPT-S
Sarah Stroup is a licensed marriage and family therapist and registered play therapist supervisor. She has a group practice, Monarch Family Counseling, with locations in Lehi, Herriman, and South Jordan. Monarch Family Counseling offers play therapy supervision and is an approved APT continuing education provider for the Monarch Training Center.
Sarah works with people throughout their lifespan to help them achieve the best version of themselves. She has a passion for working with kids/teens who need a safe place to process big feelings and learn to cope with them, couples who are looking to reconnect and reignite their relationship, trauma-including betrayal, attachment, and women who need space to take care of their own mental health needs. She is especially passionate about attachment and helping people find the right relationships they need to grow. She utilizes empirically supported modalities such as EMDR, experiential therapy, sand tray therapy, and CBT.
Maggi Leavitt, LMFT, RPT-S
Maggi is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Play Therapist – Supervisor. She earned Bachelors in family studies and a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University. She is the clinical director at Sunray Family Counseling and an MFT supervisor. Maggi is also a provider for Monarch Training Center where she provides trainings and RPT Supervision.
Her specialties include play therapy, trauma, attachment issues, depression and anxiety. She has speciality trainings in Autplay and EMDR. She is passionate about helping others see their full potential and is a huge fan of Brene Brown’s work.
Maggi loves being outdoors and traveling. She loves being a wife and mom and has recently taken up the hobby of knitting which helped her survive doing telehealth during COVID-19.
