Foundations of Adlerian Play Therapy &
Interventions in Adlerian Play Therapy
September 15th and 16th, 2023
Scenic View Academy, Orem, Utah
This conference will provide each participant
12 DirectContact CE’s. Participant may choose to apply this training toward requirement for the RPT (TM) credential: Play Therapy Seminal Theory, Play Therapy Special Topics, or Applicant’s Choice
In this fun, interactive 2-day workshop, Terry Kottman, “inventor” of Adlerian play therapy, and
Erica Wassenaar, expert teacher of Adlerian play therapy, will introduce participants to Adlerian
play therapy, an evidence-based method of integrating the concepts and techniques of
Individual Psychology with the practice of play therapy (Dillman Taylor & Kottman, 2019;
Kottman & Meany-Walen, 2016, 2018). Participants will learn methods for establishing
relationships with clients, exploring client’s lifestyles, helping clients gain insight into their
lifestyles, and reorienting and reeducating clients.
In Adlerian play therapy, therapists use the concepts of Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology to conceptualize children and their parents and teachers, while using toys, art, and metacommunication to connect with them. The process of co-creating a relationship with the child allows play therapists to communicate (mostly through
metaphor, but sometimes through direct verbal interaction) in a way that facilitates exploration
of the child’s patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, helps the child gain insight into those
patterns, and invites the child to make changes in any patterns that are self-defeating or
destructive. We will explore several of the ways that Adlerians conceptualize children and the
significant adults in their lives: impact of culture, goals of misbehavior, the Crucial Cs, and
personality priorities. Engaging the child’s parents and teachers, exploring their own lifestyles
and their interaction with the child, helping them to understand the child’s patterns, and
teaching skills for improving the relationship is an integral part of the consultation component
of Adlerian play therapy.
