The Necessary Dimensions That Facilitate the Process of Play Therapy Supervision
This interactive workshop will focus on supervision as a relationship in which the primary focus is on the person of the play therapist and skill development is secondary. Areas we will explore are facilitating the play therapist’s self-understanding, insight, and self-acceptance; identifying personal intangibles of the therapist that impact the therapeutic relationship; structuring self-supervision and clarifying the play therapist’s theory of play therapy– Garry will critique a video of one of his adult therapy sessions to show how the principles of play therapy theory may be seen more clearly when applied in adult therapy.
Other topics are: personality characteristics of effective play therapy supervisors; role of the supervisor and modeling; utilizing parallel process; developing play therapy skills/Play Therapy Skills Check List; structuring intensive supervision and equipping play therapists to become supervisors. Oh yes, one more topic:
the question every play therapist should ask when they first meet a child.
Learning will be enhanced by Garry supervising several videos of play therapy sessions of volunteers from the group.
Objectives
Following the workshop, participants will be able to 1) describe how to facilitate a play therapist’s self-understanding; 2) identify three intangible dimensions that impact the play therapy relationship; 3) describe a procedure for clarifying a play therapist’s chosen theory of play therapy; 4) identify personality characteristics of effective play therapy supervisors; 5) identify play therapy skills of effective play therapists; 6) describe how to structure an intensive supervision experience.
